Point of Sales Application for Airline

Nowadays, customers want to make purchases at any location with information of the product made available to them. The airline wanted to instil a strong level of customer engagement for travellers beyond the usual flight experience by providing an onboard retail environment which would give their customers an access to in-flight exclusive offers for items pertaining to travel and other needs.

Astera proposed and developed a cross platform mobile application through which the flight attendants could sell products to customers onboard. The application was extensible across different platforms such as iOS, Windows and Android. The main features of the application included products' catalog, flight details, airline and crew information on the flight to the onboard customer, identifying a passenger from the aircraft's seatmap visually, online payment of all types (credit, debit and coupons etc.), capturing the feedback from passengers, online and offine sale of transactions for the flight attendant with synchronization facility.

The platform on which the application was built comprised of technologies like C# 4.0, SQLite, MAC OS X 10.6 and above using tools like Xamarin Studio and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

Successful implementation of the application resulted in improved productivity of the flight attendants due to reduction in time for on board customer service. Also, it helped them to optimize inventory accounts and sale performance, improve customer loyalty and increase ROI.

Cheque Truncation System for Public Sector Bank

The existing Cheque Truncation System was facing performance issues and their server used to hang for a transaction load of around 40,000 inward cheques per day. Also, uploading of inward file from the different branches of the bank to the main branch used to take around 5 hours every day. These two issues were badly affecting the day-to-day operations of the bank and were causing delays in clearing of cheques regularly.

Astera studied and analysed the existing software. It was observed that single-tier architecture was used for the Cheque Truncation System which was leading to a bottleneck. Also, the program for uploading of the inward file was written based on the http protocol which was taking up more time. Astera proposed and modified the existing architecture of the system from single-tier to n-tier (5 tiers were used). Also, inward file upload logic was changed from http protocol to TCP/IP protocol and socket programming was used. Besides, the code for generation of images for scanned cheques was optimized to drastically reduce the overall size.

The platform on which the application was built/updated comprised of technologies like ASP.Net, C# 4.0, MS SQL Server 2012, TCP/IP, Socket Programming and Binary Programming.

Successful implementation of the above mentioned changes resulted in improved performance of the Cheque Truncation System. The server could now easily handle upto 2,50,000 inward cheques per day without any issues. Also, the inward file uploading time reduced to maximum 5 minutes every day. The productivity of the bank staff also increased drastically as the work that used to earlier take around 24 hours to complete could now be completed in about an hour only.

File Tracking System for Corporate

The existing mechanism for tracking files was based on MS Excel which was leading to numerous problems like missing files (files that were untraceable), not able to determine the current status of files i.e. whether files are available in the store or already issued to users, difficult to find the current location of files in the store when they need to be issued to users, etc. Since a very large number of files were involved, all this was resulting in a chaos and wastage of manpower besides dissatisfied users who were not able to lay their hands to the required files for performing their day-to-day activities.

Astera studied the current mechanism and process followed at the client's end and proposed a File Tracking System that included configurable workflows for file request from the user, issuing requested file to the user and file return from the user. Also, a provision was made to maintain scanned (soft) files along with the physical files for better management and control. Each file was tagged to a department, financial year and its specific physical location which could be easily maintained by the storekeepers. Several reports were also developed to provide complete visibility to the users as well as to the file storekeepers in real time.

The platform on which the application was built comprised of technologies like ASP.Net, MVC 4, BootStrap, Razor, Drapper.Net, C# 4.0, MS SQL Server 2012 Express Edition using tools like Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

Successful implementation of the application resulted in restoration of order and control in maintaining the files and tracking them. Now, each and every file could be traced at the wink of an eye giving complete visibility to everyone. No more time and efforts were wasted now to locate the physical file while issuing them to the users. As the overall service levels of the file store improved, the satisfaction level of the users also increased drastically thereby leading to an increase in their productivity.
